Choosing a QHD, 4K or DQHD monitor for your PC and desk

Compare 24, 27, 32-inch and ultrawide monitors using resolution, pixel density, scaling and desk space—not diagonal screen size alone.

อ่านภาษาไทย

A bigger monitor does not always show more information. Sometimes it shows the same number of pixels over a larger area. Another screen may offer more detail but need scaling adjustments before text feels comfortable to read.

Choose diagonal size, resolution and desk layout together rather than settling on 27 or 32 inches first and discovering the trade-offs later.

The same size can deliver different pixel density

Pixels per inch, or PPI, describes how densely pixels are arranged. Calculate it by taking the square root of the horizontal pixel count squared plus the vertical pixel count squared, then dividing by the diagonal size in inches.

These are calculated examples using the stated nominal diagonals, not measured image-quality results from specific monitors. Actual panel diagonals may differ slightly from marketed size classes.

Assumed size and resolutionApproximate PPI
24 inches — 1920 × 108091.8
27 inches — 1920 × 108081.6
27 inches — 2560 × 1440108.8
32 inches — 2560 × 144091.8
27 inches — 3840 × 2160163.2
32 inches — 3840 × 2160137.7
34 inches — 3440 × 1440109.7
49 inches — 5120 × 1440108.5

In this example, 24-inch Full HD and 32-inch 2560 × 1440 have similar pixel density. That does not make the entire viewing experience identical: distance, scaling and the actual panel still matter.

Around 24 inches: start with the desk you have

When desk depth is limited, or you prefer the whole picture close to the centre of your view, try a screen around 24 inches before dismissing it as too small. Open a real document and a familiar game rather than judging only from product photographs.

Measure the stand footprint as well. A relatively compact screen can still use considerable desk depth. For a monitor arm, confirm the mounting pattern, supported weight and requirements of both products.

27 and 32 inches: always pair size with resolution

At 27 inches, compare Full HD, 2560 × 1440 and 4K using text at a size you would actually work with. Higher resolution is worth investigating when you want more detail, but it is not a universal requirement for every buyer.

At 32 inches, also test how the screen occupies your desk. Arrange the windows you use every day. A larger panel may not suit you when it requires more head or body movement than you prefer, regardless of how attractive the specification sheet looks.

Ultrawide adds horizontal space; it does not automatically mean 4K

A 3440 × 1440 image has 1440 vertical rows, while 3840 × 2160 has 2160. A 5120 × 1440 image has the same mathematical pixel count as two 2560 × 1440 displays side by side. That does not establish how your applications or games will use the space.

Try a two- or three-window layout that reflects your work. Decide whether the extra width makes the task easier rather than simply placing windows farther apart. For games, verify support for the intended aspect ratio instead of assuming every title fills the screen in the same way.

Try scaling before lowering resolution

Windows provides settings for enlarging text and interface elements separately from screen resolution. When text looks too small, start by testing scaling at the monitor's recommended resolution, then check the applications you actually use.

This is a more representative test than briefly viewing a 4K desktop at 100% scaling and concluding that the screen is impossible to read.

Curved or flat is another fit question

Treat curvature as something to evaluate from your normal seated position, not as an automatic picture-quality upgrade. Try a spreadsheet or an image with straight lines. When another person regularly shares the display, check their viewing position too.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 27-inch Full HD monitor unsuitable for work?

There is no universal prohibition. Consider text-size preference, viewing distance and the actual task. PPI is a comparison tool, not a substitute for trying the display.

Is “2K” enough information to identify a resolution?

Ask for the actual pixel dimensions, such as 2560 × 1440, so the comparison is unambiguous.

What should I check after choosing a size?

Match panel type, resolution, refresh rate and connections to the computer, then evaluate the exact monitor rather than size alone.

Compatibility and performance are two checks

Compatibility asks whether the graphics hardware can send the target resolution and refresh rate through the available connection. Performance asks how well the PC runs your work or games at those settings. Passing the first check does not answer the second.

For integrated graphics, consult the exact CPU specification and the system or motherboard documentation. With a discrete graphics card, check the actual card's outputs. An HDMI or DisplayPort label without supported-mode information is not enough.

Resolution changes pixel count; screen inches do not

A 27-inch and a 32-inch monitor at the same resolution have the same number of pixels, despite their different physical sizes. To compare resolutions, multiply horizontal pixels by vertical pixels.

Example resolutionPixels per imageRelative to 1920 × 1080
1920 × 10802.07 million1.00×
2560 × 14403.69 million1.78×
3440 × 14404.95 million2.39×
3840 × 21608.29 million4.00×
5120 × 14407.37 million3.56×

These are calculated pixel-count ratios, not FPS ratios. Four times the pixels does not establish that every game will run at one-quarter of the frame rate. Workload, settings and the component limiting performance also matter.

Compare like-for-like performance evidence

Record the game and version, resolution, graphics settings, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation settings before using a result to support a purchase. A test with a feature enabled should not silently be treated as equivalent to one with it disabled.

For your own testing, record demanding scenes and noticeable interruptions as well as the average. The headline average may not describe the section of the game that prompted the upgrade. Save a screenshot of the settings beside each result so later comparisons remain meaningful.

Check the conditions of the maximum display mode

Some advertised modes have conditions. For example, ASUS XG27ACMES specifies 255Hz in OC mode. Check and enable a supported mode; do not assume that every connection delivers the maximum.
